How to Manage Brine Disposal & Treatment

There are several different ways that you are going to be able to manage the brine disposal and treatment through a brine distributor.

Surface Water Discharge

The first way is when the brine is discharged to the surface water bodies. This is going to include bodies of water like reservoirs, rivers, and lakes. This is one of the lower cost solutions that you are going to be able to use for the brine disposal. But you are going to need to make sure that it is done in compliance with the facility in your county permits. This facility is going to be the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System.

Evaporation Pond

The second way is through an evaporation pond. This means that the brine is going to be accumulated in the impoundment or pond of the surface. This is going to allow the brine to concentrate as the water evaporates into the atmosphere. For this, you are not going to need a federal permit but depending on the state that you live in, you might need some monitoring.

Land application

The third way is through the land application. This is when the brine is going to be disposed on the land. Basically, the brine is going to be used as the irrigation water.

Deep Well Injection

The fourth way is through the deep well injection. This means that the brine is going to be injected into the porous subsurface rock formation. But you are going to need to be aware that is going to cost you a lot of money. This is because you will have to drill and maintain the well on a regular basis. You are also going to need an underground injection control permit. This is going to be for the rigorous site evaluation and monitoring.

Sewer Discharge

The fifth way is through the sewer discharge. This is when the brine is going to be disposed of in the local sanitary sewer system. This is going to be a mingled discharge from the site that is mingled. It will need to comply with the discharge requirements from the sewage plant operator or the treatment works that is publicly owned. This is going to be something that you are going to want to do with you are trying to reduce the amount of brine. This is going to be especially true when it comes to to the industrial reverse osmosis system. Therefore, you will have a high recovery and use a lot less brine that could be wasted.

Dust Control

The sixth way is through controlling the dust. This is going to be important for the climates that are dryer and during the summer months. This is because it is going to be applied to the roadway or the field in the form of spraying.

De-icing Agent

The seventh way is through using a de-icing agent. Most of the time, this is going to be in the form of road salt. Therefore, it is going to be used on the road during the winter months to help suppress some of the ice on the road. This is when the brine might be used.

When you are thinking about the amount of brine that can be wasted on a regular basis, it can be quite a burden. This is because it can cost your company a lot of money to dispose of it properly. You have to think about the fact that it is generated by the inefficient reverse osmosis system. Therefore, it is going to waste a lot of water too, which is going to cost you a lot of money.
